Security Fears Rise: Newcastle Mosques Targeted Amid Riots

On Wednesday, 3rd July 2024, at approximately 8:15 PM, Newcastle faced a chilling wave of violence as rioters attacked mosques amid nationwide unrest. The Newcastle Central Mosque was among the primary targets. This violence was part of a broader pattern of riots spreading across the UK, raising alarms about the safety of religious minorities and the role of online platforms in escalating these tensions.

The violence in Newcastle wasn’t an isolated event. Instead, it was part of a larger, more insidious problem brewing across the country. Over the weeks leading up to the attack, social media platforms had become hotbeds of inflammatory rhetoric and misinformation. On 1st July 2024, a video falsely claiming that a UK mosque was involved in illegal activities went viral. Despite being quickly debunked, the video sparked outrage and fueled extremist sentiments.

Violence Spread like fire

Far-right groups, already active on these platforms, seized the opportunity to coordinate attacks on mosques across the UK. These groups used encrypted messaging apps to organize their movements, recruit participants, and spread their message of hate. By the time the Newcastle attack occurred, these extremists had already orchestrated similar acts of violence in other cities, showing the dangerous power of social media in modern-day conflicts.

As the attackers approached the Newcastle Central Mosque in a white van, they were met by a small team of security guards. A local security firm, had been contracted to protect the mosque following previous threats. Four guards were on duty that night, tasked with safeguarding the building and its occupants. Although outnumbered and unarmed, these guards bravely confronted the attackers in an attempt to protect the mosque.

The rioters, wielding bricks and iron rods, caused significant damage. They smashed windows, vandalized property, and even attempted to set parts of the mosque on fire. The guards managed to delay the attackers long enough to call the police, but the situation rapidly deteriorated.

The police received the emergency call at 8:22 PM but did not arrive on the scene until 8:40 PM—an 18-minute delay that many argue contributed to the extensive damage. This has raised concerns about the ability of law enforcement to respond promptly to such incidents, especially when coordinated attacks are becoming more common. Newcastle Police have since promised to review their response times and increase patrols around vulnerable sites, but for many, these assurances come too late.

Thankfully, there were no fatalities during the attack on the Newcastle Central Mosque, but several people were injured. Among the injured were two security guards who sustained minor injuries while defending the mosque. Inside, worshippers were left traumatized by the violent events, and the community has been struggling to come to terms with what happened.

Response of Locals

Local residents were quick to respond, gathering at the scene to support the mosque’s congregation. The attack has sparked fear and anxiety, with many in the community now feeling unsafe in their own city. This incident has not only caused physical damage but has also left emotional scars that may take a long time to heal. The sense of vulnerability among the community members is palpable, and there is a growing demand for stronger security measures to protect places of worship.

In the aftermath of the attack, the Newcastle community has been grappling with shock and fear. Yet, alongside these emotions, there has also been a powerful display of solidarity. Residents from all walks of life have come together to support their Muslim neighbors, participating in vigils and community meetings to stand against hate and violence.

Response of Long-Time Muslim Residents

Long-time residents like A.Khan expressed their disbelief that such violence could occur in their city. “We’ve always prided ourselves on being a close-knit community, but this has left us all feeling vulnerable and scared,” he said. Despite this fear, the community’s response has been overwhelmingly positive, with many non-Muslims joining their Muslim neighbors in condemning the attack and calling for stronger security measures.

Security guards who were on duty that night have also shared their experiences, highlighting the challenges they faced. One guard, who asked to remain anonymous, described the situation as “terrifying” but emphasized their commitment to protecting those inside the mosque. Their bravery, despite the overwhelming odds, has been widely praised and has brought attention to the critical role that security personnel play in safeguarding vulnerable communities.

The delayed response from law enforcement has sparked a national outcry, with many calling for an investigation into the handling of the incident. The UK government has also taken a strong stance, with the Prime Minister condemning the attacks and announcing an emergency meeting to address the growing threat of hate crimes and extremist violence.

Prime Minister’s response

In a statement released the morning after the attack, the Prime Minister said, “This kind of violent behavior is absolutely unacceptable. We will not tolerate hate crimes in our country, and we will do everything in our power to protect our citizens and bring those responsible to justice.” These words have resonated with many, but there is also a widespread belief that more concrete actions are needed to prevent such incidents from happening again.

In Newcastle, a series of interfaith events have been organized in the wake of the attacks, bringing together people from different religious and cultural backgrounds to stand against hate and promote peace. These events have been well-received, drawing large crowds and fostering a sense of solidarity across the city. This outpouring of support has been a source of comfort for the Muslim community, who have felt isolated and vulnerable in the aftermath of the violence.

Response of Newcastle’s Councillor

Councillor L.Mason, who represents the Newcastle Central ward, has been vocal in her support for the Muslim community. “There’s no place for this kind of violence in our society,” she said. “We need to work together to ensure that everyone in our community feels safe and respected, regardless of their background or beliefs.” Her words have been echoed by other leaders, who have called for continued efforts to build bridges between different communities and to promote a culture of tolerance and respect.
